2015 AIPP WA Professional Portrait Photographer

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks escaping the south coast winter camping on a remote beach, washing in the ocean and cooking over a fire. By contrast, the 10 days prior to that I was in Perth, immersed in all-things Photography, firstly at the WA Epson Professional Photography Awards (WAEPPAs) and then at the AIPP’s annual gathering, The Nikon Event, which this year was held in Perth. The unquestionable highlight of these last three or four weeks was being named 2015 AIPP WA Professional Portrait Photographer, and also being presented with the coveted and prestigious John Whitfield King trophy which is awarded annually for best people photograph across all categories.

It’s only now, after returning from the remote north west of WA that I have time to sit down and soak it all in.

It was the first time I’d attended the judging for either the state or the national awards. I’d entered four images into the Portrait category, and a wedding fine art book into the Album of the Year category. The judging panel was made up of some of Australia’s most recognised and respected photographers, and each image entered was critiqued and a score awarded. Being there gave me a huge appreciation for not just the task of the judges, but also for all the work that goes on behind the scenes. I’ve always marvelled at the support, networks and friendships amongst Australia’s professional photographers, and seeing everyone’s reactions as prints received high scores only reinforced that sense of camaraderie.

So with the judging done and dusted, a silver award for my fine art book, and silvers/silvers with distinction for all four of my portraits, I had a day to myself in the city. The following night was the Awards presentation which was a “dress to impress” affair and this country girl was on a quest for new shoes!

To say I was shocked and overwhelmed when my name was read out as an award-winner, not just once but twice, would be an understatement! Thanks so much for the lovely feedback from everyone.

You can see all the 2015 category winners and their images here. A big congratulations to John Woodhouse who won the title of WA Professional Photographer of the Year.
